Dr. Shirley Jean– Founder of Jean Inclusive Wellness
Dr. Shirley Jean is a highly respected Adapted Physical Education Specialist, college professor, researcher, and community advocate dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities in physical education. With experience teaching at 27 schools within her district, she has been instrumental in shaping adapted physical activity programs for students with disabilities.
As a grant recipient and Senior Adjunct Faculty at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) and Azusa Pacific University (APU), Dr. Jean has contributed to academia by assisting in the redesign of graduate course curriculum for accreditation at APU. She has also served as a teacher representative for the State Council on Adapted Physical Education and an NEA delegate at the NEA Representative Assembly, advocating for policies that support students with disabilities.
Dr. Jean is a visionary leader, having founded the Mobility Opportunities Via Experience (MOVE) program at San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD), where she trained 22 teachers and three parents to implement functional motor skills interventions for students with severe disabilities. Her advocacy efforts led to the establishment of two district-wide programs: a preschool inclusion class and an employee tuition program that supports working families.
Beyond her work in education, Dr. Jean is an active community leader and board member of the Rotary Club, where she mentors Rotary Life students and engages in multiple service projects. She has partnered with Music Changing Lives to create a peace garden and a free children’s library, promoting literacy and community engagement.
Her dedication to equity and inclusion extends to professional organizations, where she serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Rehabilitation Practices and Research (ISSN: 2583-1593) and is a committee member for SBCUSD’s SHINE vision for 2030. Additionally, she has been elected to the School Site Council for Muscoy Elementary with the highest number of votes and is a nominated board member of the CTA Good Teaching Planning Committee.
Dr. Jean is an active member of the CTA African American Caucus, NEA Black Caucus, and CTA BadAss Teacher Caucus, continuously advocating for diversity and representation in education. She has presented at numerous workshops and conferences, including the CTA Special Education Conference and the CTA Good Teaching North and South Conferences, covering topics such as adapted physical education, gross motor interventions, diversity in kinesiology, and inclusion strategies.
Through Jean Inclusive Wellness, Dr. Jean is committed to empowering individuals of all abilities through adapted physical activity, ensuring that everyone has access to meaningful movement experiences that promote health, wellness, and independence.
